Nadir Ciray MD, PhD

Nadir Ciray MD, PhD is the founder and the Director of OvoScore Ltd. He is a Senior Clinical Embryologist, an IVF Laboratory Director and a Researcher in Reproductive Medicine. He is certified as a Senior Clinical Embryologist by the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (2008) and a Reproductive Embryologist (Level IV): EMB by American College of Embryologists (2014).

Dr Ciray served in clinical, academic and managerial positions before founding OvoScore Ltd.

He obtained his Medical Doctor (1981-1987) and Histologist&Embryologist (1988-1991) degrees from Ankara University, Turkey. He has studied the human myometrium in labour at the ultrastructural level during his residency and from a functional perspective during his PhD in Uppsala University Academic Hospital, Sweden (Thesis: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis ISBN-10: 9155437753).

Dr Ciray began training in the newly established IVF Unit of Uppsala University Academic Hospital as an Embryologist after PhD. He then moved to Istanbul to practise clinical IVF in the first privately owned hospital in Turkey. In the meantime he has established the Histology & Embryology Department of Kadir Has University in Istanbul and was appointed Head of the Department.

From 1999 to 2012, Dr Ciray served as the Embryology Group Director of The German Hospital and Bahceci Health Group IVF Laboratories. During his employment, the Group grew from one to six units in domestic and international locations and the number of annual treatment cycles increased from 1000 to approximately 7000. This period provided him with experience in the design, establishment, maintenance and quality management of IVF units, as well as publishing in the field of clinical IVF. He has trained several clinical embryologists and established routine utilisation of novel techniques (including time-lapse monitoring of pre-implantation embryo development) within the units. Dr Ciray also served as the Manager in one of the Group’s clinics Istanbul.

He has been employed as a Lecturer in Clinical Embryology by the Division of Reproduction and Early Development at the Medical Faculty of University of Leeds (UK) from July 2013 until the end of 2016. During that period Dr Ciray was the deputy programme lead for the MSc in Clinical Embryology. He assisted in the development and delivery of lectures and practicals, e-learning and paper-based materials. Dr Ciray was the module manager for 2 modules including a 35 credit module on IVF and Embryo Culture and a second 15 credit module on Cryobiology/ Cryopreservation, both of which are shared modules across the 2 MSc programmes MSc/PGDip in Clinical Embryology (Clin Emb) and MSc/PGDip in Clinical Embryology and Assisted Reproduction Technology (CEART). Dr Ciray was a personal tutor and research project tutor and undertook general teaching administrative tasks including student recruitment, teaching quality assurance and examination and assessment.

Dr Ciray has been an invited speaker at many scientific events. He served as an advisor/consultant for Irvine Scientific, ESCO Medical and Gonagen Medical (he was also a shareholder). He is an Editorial Board Member of Journal of Clinical Embryology. He is reviewer for many internationally recognised high quality journals, including Human Reproduction, Fertility and Sterility, Journal of Assisted Reproduction and Genetics, Reproductive BioMedicine Online and Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology. He reviewed grant applications for NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Program – Clinical Evaluation and Trials, in the UK, and Research Foundation – Flanders (Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek – Vlaanderen, FWO).

His research has been funded by the Turkish Scientific and Technology Research Association, and earlier by Stiftelsen Familjeplaneringsfonden i Uppsala.

He is one of the founders of Turkish Clinical Embryology Society.
